How To Be A Manic Pixie Dream Girl

(disclaimer being a manic pixie dream girl is not for the faint of heart, or for those with feelings)

So you wanna be a manic pixie dream girl huh?

Well ladies and gentlemen you are in for a serious treat,

while we are lead to believe that manic pixie dream girls are stock characters that exist only in fictional universes, but I'll have you know that they not only exist, but I'm one of these said mythical creatures.

So, if by now I have lost you, let me explain

a "manic pixie dreamgirl" is a term coined by the film critic Nathan Rabin who created the phrase after seeing Kirstin Dunsts performance in the 2005 film Elizabethtown. He describes this said character as "that bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures."

a few examples of these creatures are:

Natalie Portman as Sam in Garden State

Kate Hudson as Penny Lane in Almost Famous

Zoey Deschanel as Summer in (500) Days of Summer

Ruth Gordon as Maude in Harold and Maude

and most notably Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffanys

so what does these characters most obviously have in common?

They are unbashfully feminine, slightly crazy, full of quirks and are occasionally seen as one dimensional.

 Your identity might be misconstrued as one dimensional is because the lonely brooding soulful type will probably fall in love with the idea of you not the person you are.  

Now I'm not claiming that being a manic pixie dream girl is the best thing in the world, but it is what I am. 

and in order to be so you need a few things:

1. Spectacular Hair

Whether its colored, i.e., Clementine from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or Ramona Flowers i.e., Scott Pilgrim fame, colored hair, jaunty hats or spectacular bangs hair and or hair accessories are vital to the MPDG. Beautiful hair is quintessential to being a dream girl, we know that from any dream sequence from any film ever, I mean have you seen Hot For Teacher by Van Halen?

Whether its Holly Golightly's bouffant or Zoey Deschanel's bangs, hair means everything, its the first thing that captures your love interest's heart and its quintessential to your image.

2. A Magnificent Taste in Music

Do you notice how many times music is what brings the sad sack and the MPDG together?

I made a brief mix tape of all my favorite songs that are essential to being a MPDG, and will bring you closer to said boy. Because if it weren't for music how else would Summer and JGL gotten together, and without her would he have learned anything about life and the decisions we make?

3. Commitment Issues
While the aforementioned commitment issues are perpetually alluded too, you can never address them directly. Remember these boys have to fall in love with the idea of you, they can never know what has turned you into this MPDG. Few people actually know why I am the way I am with boys, and that is exactly why. These said commitment issues allow you to get as close to these boys without declaring them as your so you can easily change your mind at the drop of a hat. Again, this job isn't for the faint of heart or for those with feelings, you will hurt people.

4. A Zest for Life and Hatred for all Things Boring
This is vital to the MPDG, you need to be quirky and zesty and think outside the box. You will bring him into Ikea and pretend that it is your house, having an extensive tea collection or being a band-aid, you need to love life and live it to the fullest. This is another key factor to entrapping this sad sack, he is afraid to live and fantasizes about a life like yours. You show him how wonderful life can be to later break his sad heart leaving him with a greater understanding of the opposite sex.  

5.You Have to Break their Heart. 
simple enough, yet slightly tragic.
but if you are a true MPDG you have to do it with little or no emotion.
The sad sack NEVER ends up with the manic pixie dream girl.

I hope this advice helped aspiring MPDG's become the true heartbreaker that they want to be.

But I leave you with one last gem of advice: The real world is not a fictional universe, so act with caution.

America Means to Me...

America means to me the right and freedom to dress appropriately slutty for every holiday. 

America means the right to indulge in all forms of the 7 deadly sins with little to no judgement from your peers.

America means to me that I can walk outside my door not worrying about societal expectations and preconceived notions of how I should dress, behave or live my life. 

America means to me that a boy who grew up with little to nothing can work his way to the top becoming a Vice President of a major exporting company and have four beautiful daughters that are attending university. 

America means free birth control, the right to vote, and the ability to report sexual assault or hate crimes to the police. 

America means freedom of self expression

The ability to legally drink, smoke and serve my country. 

My ancestors were on the mayflower, and I think despite a lot of the bullshit we are still dealing with, this country has made amazing leaps and bounds in terms of equal rights, civil rights and an advancement in technology that would make Abraham Lincolns hat spin.

So before you go wagging your finger at this country because of this or that, just take a moment to realize just how lucky you are to live here.

Serious Question: What Happened to the Harajuku Girls?

If you don't follow me on tumblr you might understand this tangent, if not allow me to explain. 

My brain is a strange little mechanism. 

It works in very weird ways, connecting random and potentially obscure references points that lead to questions that lead to my fingers typing up wikipedia.org faster than you can say "do you remember..."

For example,

I've been doing critical analysis of female pop songs from mid 2000's for fun (I'm weird)

so I was listening to stickwitu (The best title of any song ever) by the Pussycat Dolls

where this thought came across my mind

and while further watching this music video I came across this cellphone

I chuckled at how prehistoric that phone is but then remembered it was 2004 and that phone was probably cutting edge in telecommunication technology. 

Then I started reminiscing about 2004 and remembered Fergalicious,

I started watching the music video which lead me to this thought

and while watching this music video and quietly singing the words to myself I noticed her cellphone and nails

 and was immediately reminded of Gwen Stefani's music video for Luxurious

which takes the cake for bad cellphones

which lead me to this thought

Just look at it!

Also the last two music videos had the common theme of lying on a giant pool of candy, something that remains untouched on my bucketlist.

WHEN AM I GONNA DO THAT?

While watching this music video and longing to swim in candy I quickly developed the desire to watch more

which lead me to one of my favorite music videos/songs ever

but while watching, I started to wonder

and while wanting my own Harajuku girls, I began my research.

Maya Chino, LOVE, is working as a hip hop instructor for children in LA. She is also the head choreographer for HMA's hip hop team RIZA according to Wikipedia.  While I didnt discover much, mostly because the majority of the websites were in japanese, she is described as "soft and caring" which is a direct correlation to the scent made after her. Its nice to know that she actually has a personality because despite her kick-ass dance moves I know nothing about her personally, oh the troubles of being a hype girl.

Jennifer Kita, ANGEL/ Lil Angel,  studied hiphop at MESA college, and joined the dance troupe, Culture Shock San Diego, then joined Urban FX. According to her twitter she is very into astrology, stating she is a proud Libra and is the cofounder of Creativity Heals, an organization providing relief for those who've been affected due to massive flooding in the Mekong delta region of Vietnam. Her scent describes her as someone who cares for others but isnt a saint. 

 Rino Nakasone Razalan, MUSIC, is originally from Osaka Japan. She was featured on America's Best Dance Crew, season three, competeing with the girl group "Beat Freaks." She's married to the manager of the Beat Freaks, Lee-J Razalan. She's danced for many famous musicians, Missy Elliott, Britney Spears and even my favorite, JBeebz and she was briefly signed as a member of the Pussycat Dolls (EVERYTHING GOES FULL CIRCLE WITH MY BRAIN). She is described by her perfume as having the strongest personality...whatever that means

Lastly, Mayuko Kitayama, BABY,  who was the hardest to research, is now living in New York, she did minor background dance work for Britney Spears during that crazy tour in 2007 when she wore all those wigs. And According to her twitter she is touring with Usher as a background dancer, she appeared on Ellen and The Billboard Music awards, dancing beside him. Her scent is described as "innocent and exciting," which is very sweet and apparently very appropriate.

I couldnt find any article that says that they are for sure done with Gwen, but I'm assuming since No Doubt is back together, the Harajuku girls disbanded 

Despite ethnic stereotypes, I quite enjoyed the Harajuku girls, and I'm quite excited to know that they are all happy and all doing well.

Man, now I'm wondering what happened to all the members of The Pussy Cat Dolls?
